Make Your Own Organic Vanilla Extract

Updated: Sep 18

Do you love the rich aroma and flavor of vanilla in your baked treats and desserts? Imagine being able to create your very own organic vanilla extract!

Mexican Vanilla Beans

Ingredients:

  • 5 Organic Vanilla Beans. I prefer Superior Grade Mexican vanilla beans. Mexican Vanilla has a smooth spicy flavor that has become my go-to. Madagascar vanilla has a creamy rich classic vanilla flavor, which is also wonderful. If you prefer a more fruity, floral flavor, Tahitian Vanilla is a great option.

  • 8 ounces High-quality organic vodka or other 80 proof alcohol

(You can use bourbon, rum or brandy if you prefer. I like using vodka for a more neutral flavor.)

Tools:

  • Sharp knife

  • Cutting board

  • Glass jar with a tight-sealing lid.

Instructions:

  • Choose Your Vanilla Beans: Start by selecting high-quality vanilla beans.

  • Prepare the Beans: Using a sharp knife and cutting board, carefully split each vanilla bean lengthwise, exposing the tiny seeds inside. This step is crucial as it allows the flavors to infuse into the alcohol.

  • Place in a Glass Jar: Next, place the split vanilla beans into a clean glass jar. Ensure the jar has a tight-sealing lid to prevent evaporation and keep the contents fresh.

  • Add Alcohol: Pour the vodka over the vanilla beans, ensuring they are completely submerged. The alcohol will extract the flavors and aromas from the beans, creating a potent vanilla extract.

  • Store in a Dark Place: Seal the jar tightly and store it in a dark, cool place. Allow the vanilla beans to steep in the alcohol for at least 6-8 weeks. You can gently shake the jar every few days to help infuse the flavors.

  • Strain and Enjoy: After the steeping period is over, strain the liquid through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the vanilla bean remnants. Transfer the rich, amber-colored liquid into a clean glass bottle for storage. You may also opt to leave the vanilla beans in the alcohol and top it off from time to time.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Quality Matters: Use the best vanilla beans and alcohol you can find for a superior extract.

  • Patience is Key: Allow the extract to steep for an extended period for maximum flavor infusion.

Creating your own organic vanilla is a rewarding and simple process that will enhance your baking and cooking endeavors. Experiment with different types of beans and alcohol to create unique flavor profiles that suit your preferences. Impress your friends and family with homemade vanilla extract that's sure to elevate your dishes to a whole new level!
