Authentic Mexican Horchata with Organic Ingredients

Updated: Sep 18

If you have a craving for a refreshing and creamy drink, then an authentic Mexican Horchata is a must-try. Horchata, a traditional Mexican beverage, is known for its unique blend of flavors, combining rice, cinnamon, almonds and vanilla into a delightful drink that perfectly complements an iced coffee, or serves as a standalone treat.

With the growing concern for organic and natural ingredients, making your own Horchata using organic products ensures a fresh and wholesome experience. Let's delve into how you can easily prepare this delicious drink in the comfort of your own kitchen, all while using the best organic ingredients available.

Ingredients You'll Need:

  • 1 cup of organic white rice (I use jasmine rice because I love the slightly sweet and nutty flavor it imparts.

  • 4 cups of filtered water

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 1/2 cup almonds (chopped)

  • 1 Tbsp. Mexican vanilla extract, or a vanilla extract of your choice

I prefer making our vanilla extract myself, you can find the recipe here.

  • 1 cup of organic cane sugar

You can adjust the amount of sugar if you prefer it less sweet.

  • 1 can (12 oz.) Organic evaporated milk

For a non-dairy option, you can use evaporated coconut milk.

  • 1 1/2 cups organic whole milk. (Choose almond or coconut milk if you prefer.)

Instructions:

  • Soaking: Begin by rinsing the organic rice thoroughly. In a bowl, combine the rinsed rice, the cinnamon sticks, almonds and 4 cups of water. Allow the mixture to soak overnight in the refrigerator.

  • Blend the Mixture: After soaking, transfer the rice mixture into a blender. Add organic cane sugar, vanilla extract and evaporated milk. Blend the mixture until it becomes a smooth, creamy liquid and the rice is well ground.

  • Strain and Chill: Strain the blended mixture through a nut milk bag or a fine mesh sieve to remove any remaining solids. Add 1 1/2 cups milk of your choice to the strained liquid and stir well. Chill the Horchata in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving.

  • Serve and Enjoy: Pour the chilled Horchata into glasses over ice or add to your cold brew coffee for an extra special treat! You can sprinkle some ground cinnamon on top for an extra touch of flavor. For me, it's all about the presentation, so I love serving this in festive glassware!
